I had my parents on Kubuntu at first and switched them to Lubuntu once they started noticing KDE was slow on their machine. I have taught Mum to Google Ubuntu + her problem & the "help it's broken" emails turned into "I fixed it!" ones.

Yep turns out answering "how did you fix that?" questions in a skill-level-appropriate way pays huge dividends... That and/or my parents are just awesome :)
